after loading windows media and downloading all updates, i cannot open
documents in ms office nor right click properties on explorer folders without
DEP shutting down the program. the documents will eventually open after
several attempts but i cannot right click on folders. i understand the
concept, but these are microsoft products. any ideas.

Test by limiting the application of DEP, in two ways:
- Control Panel, System, Advanced, Performance, DEP
- edit C:\Boot.ini to apply DEP control there

The first lets you limit DEP only to Windows, rather than all
programs, and to list programs it should (not) be applied to.

The second requires knowledge of Boot.ini syntax and command line
options to manage safely (a bad Boot.ini can render XP unbootable), so
Google up some documentation, swot up, keep spare Boot.ini handy,
ensure there's always one OS boot entry that hasn't been tweaked.

Yes, MS Office is from MS, but the process of "opening" a document in
MS Office may invoke other software, such as resident antivirus. It
may be that which is failing to be DEP-compatible.
