Data Execution Prevention (DEP)

For some reason, Microsoft included DEP in my computer. I do
not know how it got in, but I suspect it was with Explorer
8. I find this program bothersome and intrusive. How can I
remove it?

It seems that I have to revert back to Explorer 7 to get rid
of DEP?

DEP is enabled by switches in the boot.ini file.

Data Execution Prevention is part of the Windows operating system. DEP
was introduced in Service Pack 2. It's important role is to prevent a
type of hack called a buffer overflow, which was popular among malware
writers at the time.

How about if you explain in detail how DEP is "bothersome and intrusive"
and someone will try to help you.

[In future, instead of "suspecting" what something is, use Al Gore's
invention to find out what it really is.]

Followed your advice.

It does not seem to be able to be turned off - it reads:

1. Turn on DEP for essential windows programs and services
only

2. Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I
select.

There seems nothing available to get rid of DEP - not even a
turn off bit.

It can be disabled via the boot.ini switches. You would be well advised
to follow Leonard's advice, DEP is an important protection.

My problem with DEP is also bothersome. Whenever I close a window (any
window) I get the "to help protect your computer IE has closed this window"
message. Then the "send error report" window. I have tried to check and
uncheck DEP with no luck. This began after installing IE 8. How can I stop
this???!! Would installing IE7 fix it? Can that be done? I am not very
computer savvy.
