Does anyone know of a program that will open the file "C:\Documents and
Settings\{user profile}\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\index.dat"

I tried opening it in Word Pad and Word, but it is garbled. I want to read
its contents.

It's a binary indexing file - not meant to be read with a text editor.

That's one of those things that Microsoft doesn't tell us about. You
simply aren't going to be able to make sense of it.

Yea, that's what I figured out. That is why I am looking for a program that
will open it to read.

Anyone know of a program?

I know that everytime you surf the net the files grows and is keeping a
record of all websites...even though you may purge your internet cache. I
want a program that opens it.

I downloaded a viewer program, IndexView.exe, from some random site, I cant remember. Do search on Index.dat viewer in Google. You will view everything, everyplace, you have ever been on your PC. Now to delete it... I found some ones suggestion below - have not checked it out yet, smartprotector.com. The place I downloaded the indexview program referes you to NoEvidence.com.

Actually to delete it, login as Administrator and do a search for index.dat
Make sure that your search is also looking in hidden files & folders &
system folders
Then delete all that are in your profile.
