Damaged Access 2002 FIle Repair

John

Tried Compact and repair
Tried jetcomp.exe

I have an (important!) .mdb file that has been corrupted
during a file movement. It would appear by its size that
the data is there, but I cannot access it in any way.
Everytime I try, I get a message:

Recognised Database File Type.

I think I might be asking for the impossible, but if
anyone has a solution I would love to hear it!

Hi John,

Any chance that you have both Access 97 and a higher version (2000, 2002 or 2003) installed on
your PC? If so, and you last had Access 97 open, then this is the version that is associated
with the .MDB file extension. You can receive the error:

"Unrecognized database format" + path to DB

if you attempt to double-click on a 2000 or higher format database file using Windows Explorer if
your PC attempts to use Access 97 to open it. In that case, use your Start > Programs file menu
to first open the higher version of Access. This will re-associate the .MDB file extension with
the later version of Access.

I think you can also receive this error if the database is corrupted, in which case Cheryl's
suggestion is the way to go.

Tom

There are other possible solutions as well.

For more information on corruption including possible causes,
determining the offending PC, retrieving your data, links, official MS
KB articles and a list of vendors who state they can fix corruption
see the Microsoft Access Corruption FAQ at
