Daily BSOD: unable to allocate from the system nonpaged

G

Guest

Hi All!

For a few weeks we have had a very strange problem with one of our windows
2000 servers.

In the eventlog we entries like this:

The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the
pool was empty.

And then we have about 10 minutes to reboot before it crashes.

The server is running sqlserver 7 + all patches - yes old db but we have a
legacy system that for some reason needs this version, and the server itself
is of course sp4 + patches.

We have tried strip the number of running services it down to a minimum,
leaving only necessary systems services + sqlserver running; This did not
change any thing.

The hardware is HP 380 G4, we have installed all bios updates and drivers
available from HP; no change.

Has anyone any idea on how we can solve this?
Reinstalling is of course on option, but this is last resort, as the server
is located in a branch office far away, and there will be a load of
reconfiguration afterwards.

Hope someone can help.

Best regards
Torben

Hi Ken,

Thank you for the suggestions.

In safe mode the computer at least runs for longer time than in non safe
mode. It is a production environment so I cannot let it run for ever, but it
does not look like it would crash.

We actually run McAfee, but patch 15i - just to make sure we have removed
AV, but the server did crash "as usual".
We have not installed anything that uses the 3Com driver, and no devices
claimed to be using that driver, so this is not a solution.

Current status is we still have the problem.

Any suggestions on what to do next?

Best Regards
Torben

Hi Torben,

You can copy msconfig.exe from a Windows XP machine and run it in Windows
2000. To isolate the influence of additional applications, please boot the
system into a Clean Boot environment to see whether this problem continues:

Hi Ken,

The problem has solved it self: The server crashed and we could not recover
it in any ways.
Yesterday we did a complete reinstall, and this seems to have solved the
problem.

Not the way you generally want to solve problems :)

Thank for input & suggestion to all of you.

| | Hi Ken,
| |
| | Thank you for the suggestions.
| |
| | In safe mode the computer at least runs for longer time than in non
safe
| | mode. It is a production environment so I cannot let it run for ever,
but
| it
| | does not look like it would crash.
| |
| | We actually run McAfee, but patch 15i - just to make sure we have
removed
| | AV, but the server did crash "as usual".
| | We have not installed anything that uses the 3Com driver, and no
devices
| | claimed to be using that driver, so this is not a solution.
| |
| | Current status is we still have the problem.
| |
| | Any suggestions on what to do next?
| |
| | Best Regards
| | Torben

| Hi Ken,
|
| The problem has solved it self: The server crashed and we could not
recover
| it in any ways.
| Yesterday we did a complete reinstall, and this seems to have solved the
| problem.
|
| Not the way you generally want to solve problems :)
|
| Thank for input & suggestion to all of you.

| Hi Ken,

| The server has now been running smothly since it was reinstalled, so i
guess
