I am a computer idiot attempting to make my HP Pavilion
mx70 play movies for the kids. I have no idea how to
acheive this and would appreciate any advice which might
bring about this miracle. The retail outlet who sold me
the machine recently tell me that I should just put in
the DVD and it will play? Strangely enough, this doesnt
appear to work.

That is all you should have to do (provided you have software to play DVD's
installed). Windows Media Player can play DVD's.

I insert the dvd into the slot marked hp-cd writer. The
light on the slot falshes but nothing else? I have down
loaded windvd 5 and I also have windows media player but
not the option to play dvd. It has been suggested that I
need a dvd rom? driver?decoder? Iam not sure if I have
these already or what form they take? I.e. are they
discs, floppies, physical parts that need to be placed
into the computer? Does this help or just confuse things
more? I have a second slot under the cd writer but it
appears defunct?

YOU NEED A DVD ROM THATS FOR SURE
