cyclic redundancy check

DAVID MCDONALD

I'm trying to copy files from a DVD +R to my hard disk and a few files cause
a cannot copy error which shows cyclic redundancy check as the cause.

Is there any way round this?

Hi David,

........cyclic redundancy check as the cause.

I was having the same problem with some old CDs I was trying to copy. In
my case polishing the CDs clean fixed the problems.

I'm just guessing here, but it was like the CDs were scuffed and the
player would lose its place on the CD and continue trying to retrack
where it should be. I don't even know if such a thing is possible, but
it sounds good, doesn't it?

Many possible reasons for CRC errors:

-Files were not successfully/completely transferred to DVD. If there were
errors when the files were burned, the copies are no good. Try burning
again and use the Validate/Verify option in your burning software to test
the integrity of the copied files.

-Poor quality media: Burning may seem to go fine but the read operation
fails. Or you find yourself burning a lot of coasters before getting a
"successful" burn. Better quality media produces more reliable results for
burning and reading.

-Dirty or damaged DVDs. There are cleaning kits for discs and for drives.
Sometimes just blowing a bit of canned air will remove an accumulation of
dust in the drive tray. CAUTION: Do not do this when PC is powered. Canned
air if sprayed too densely will cause an accumulation of moisture. Moisture
and electric power do not mix well. Spray lightly - a little goes a long
way.

-Dirty or damaged drive: Laser not functioning at full capacity and cannot
read the files. There is usually a corresponding "bad block" message in
Event Viewer for the drive doing the reading.

This shows a hardware read error. The file is unreadable. At this point in
time, there is no way around this problem.
