Hi,

XP Pro SP2
trying to copy a drive's folders/files to another for backup purposes ( to
an external drive)

I get many "read error - cyclic redundancy" errors ( freely translated from
french)

What does this mean ? What should I do ?

TIA !!!

Generally, it means that the folder and its contents are
not being copied properly. The "CRC error" means that the
checksum for the original and copied files do not add up
to the same number. Assuming that there are no issues with
the hard drive in the computer, check the goodness of the
connection between the computer and the external HD and
the competency of the external HD itself, esp. if it is an
"old" HD placed inside an USB box.

CRC (cyclic redundancy check) is an error checking method used in
transfer blocks of data from one location to another, when you get a CRC
error it means that some of the data was corrupted during the transfer.
In your case it is most likely a connection problem to the external
drive, the drive itself having an internal problem or possibly a driver
issue to do with your external drive. Test the drive using the
manufacturer's utility. Make sure the connection is not faulty. Look for
updated device driver from the manufacturer.
