cvs I386

My daughter has a pc running windows XP Home edition. She has what she
thinks is a virus because cvs I386 is attached to a bunch of file names.
She lives 450 miles away so it is difficult to know just what is going
on. She can connect to the internet for a short time. She can not go
to antivirus sites because the computer locks up. After a short time
she gets a pop up window saying the program has committed and error and
will shut down in 60 seconds.

Any ideas?

It depends on her available Recovery options. If not a PreInstalled system:

install XP to a new folder
(and turn on firewall before going online) run setup CD for XP, "New Instillation" from drop box) Put in Key, and choose the
"Advanced Options" button to choose the folder, (Use "Recovery" disk,if PreInstalled version)

then take ownership of the old data.

and reinstall all app's 'over the top' of current locations

Try to restore to an earlier date (Start > All Programs > Accessories >
System Tools > System Restore.) The file "cvs I386" doesn't produce any
results in google except for a linux app so I'm not certain what it is. She
might also try booting into "Safe Mode with Networking" to try and stay up
long enough for a virus scan.

Just realized, there are several i386 folders under the windows directory
and so there might be some confusion here as to what she is refering to.
Also, it's very important to get *all* information from the error message
for troubleshooting. She can check her Event Log for information about the
error.
