Usually, that means that no text is selected, and there's nothing in the
clipboard.

What version of Word is this... and was it working correctly previously? Or,
has the problem always existed?

Microsoft version 2003. It was working correctly until I deleted the program
and reinstalled. Before, when I would copy something in email Outlook
Express and then go to Word, I could click on "Edit" and Paste, Copy and Cut
would be bold to be clicked on.
I had not needed to use the clipboard.

Edit, Paste, and Copy all use the clipboard. If you never go below the first
level, this might be transparent to you, but the clipboard is the mechanism
through which Edit/Paste/Cut/Copy all work.

Windows has its own clipboard, and Office has an enhanced clipboard that
hold more items than the Windows clipboard.

For starters, I'd try repairing Office. Control Panel - Add/Remove
Programs - select Microsoft Office 2003 and then click the Repair option.
(Or, choose Help - Detect and Repair from within Word).

You could have a Word add-in that clears the Windows clipboard when Word
starts. Try opening both Word and Outlook Express before you copy from
Outlook Express.
