Cut and Paste issue

When I try to cut and paste in MS Paint, the option box for a transparent cut
or copy does'nt work. All I get is the object surrounded by white or whatever
color the background is. The thing is it used to work fine. I even tried to
restore the computer to an earlier date that I thought it worked in but no
cigar. There's gotta be a way to fix this.HELP!!!

Ok, In paint when you cut/copy and paste there are 2 choices to copy with.
the top box takes the surrounding area when you cut and the bottom box is
supposed to take only the object and the backgound is transparent. However
now I can't copy etc, in a transparent mode. It all is I guess the word is
opaque. In other words I copy a diagram or picture and want to paste it too
another pic, it used to be transparent and not cover up stuff. Now it does.
Thought about just removing paint and reloading but can't find XP disc to do
so. Is ther a downloadable fix or who? Thanks for any and all help.

Hi,
For what it's worth, I get the same condition on my Paint program that you
are reporting. Mine is version 5.1.
Reading rom Paint Help, it would seem that we should be able to paste with a
transparent background :

1.. In the toolbox, click Select to select a rectangular area, or click
Free-Form Select to select a freeform area.
2.. Drag the pointer to define the area you want to copy.
3.. Select a method of pasting:
a.. Click to apply an opaque background.
b.. Click to apply a transparent background.
4.. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
5.. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
6.. Drag the selection to a new location.
I was using the free-form select. Using either the Opaque or Transparent
buttons produces a white background around the pasted image.

See David Candy's answer .

Also , try to find your Windows CD which is really important because if you
don't have it or if you broke it Microsoft will not give you a nwe CD anymore.
(and you'll have to buy Windows again)

Using "Image menu - Draw Opaque" I find that I can use the free-form select
and outline a section of a picture and make a copy of it with a transparent
background and paste it successfully into the same picture. I don't seem to
be able to paste the segment into another picture, keeping the transparent
back ground. Is there some workaround to do that or am I limited to working
within the same picture?
Thanks,
Fred

I was able to figure it out myself.

Thanks anyway,
