Customizing WinXP Desktop ?

I like probably many of you have a desktop that is cluttered up with icons,
so many that it blocks the lovely desktop image I have. Is there a way or a
program out there out there that will turn off the icons when the mouse isn't
being used or any keys touched so I can see a nice icon-free desktop picture?

Hi Lambo,

I don't like cluttered desktops either...

1: Unlock your taskbar by rightclicking it and un-checking "Lock the
Taskbar".
2: Rightclick the Taskbar again and check "Toolbars > Desktop".
3: Position your mouse over the divide that's just to the left of the
"Desktop" title in the new toolbar.
4: Click and drag the toolbar all the way to the right so that just
"Desktop" and the down chevron are visible.
5: Lock the Taskbar.

Click the little "Down Chevron" to the right of the "Desktop" title.

Now you have an elegant dropdown or popup (depends where your Taskbar is
positioned) menu that has everything that you have on your Desktop (because
it IS your Desktop) with the added bonus of being able to drill down to any
file, use the rightclick context menu, cut and paste (close menu to update)
and any other Desktop activity without openening any windows. If you want to
do a lot of "drag and drop" stuff you can always open a window and navigate
all the way to the top of the directory tree to "Desktop".

The next part cleans up your visible desktop so you can see your wallpaper
without all the clutter.

6: Rightclick anywhere on your visible Desktop and un-check "Arrange Icons
by > Show Desktop Icons".

Hope that helps

Andy

to clean up the desk top there is a hidden feature in windows xp...follow
these steps>right click desktop>then expand arrange icons by and select Show
Desk TOp Icons to UNSELECT it> after a few seconds icons will dissappear.
Don't worry the icons wasn't deleted. to reactivate the icons repeat the
steps to enable once again.
the clutter is still there you just won't see it.

also you can place desk top items on your toolbar for easy access
by....right click on tool bar> select tool bars> desktop put check by it and
wallah you have access to desktop from toolbar...to undo follow same steps.

Right-click on desktop, click on 'Arrange Icons By', Uncheck 'Show Desktop
Icons'.
Now for the better part.
On the Traybar (Right of the Quick launch) Right-click, Toolbars, Desktop
This will give you a menu (Like Quick Launch) with the word Desktop and twoto access your desktop content.
