Customized keyboard shortcut on excel

I added a checkmark from the symbols list for a personal program but when I
use the shortcut to add it, it resizes my row height. Any ideas?
 
How do you add the checkmark from your shortcut?

I would format the cells where I wanted a checkmark to Marlett font then type a
lower case a

Row re-sizing is generally governed by having the rows set to Autofit.
