Customize Toolbar Immediate Reset

When trying to rename a macro button on a Word 2003 toolbar, the changes do
not "stick". As soon as I close the "Customize" window, the buttons revert
to the old name. If I delete buttons, the changes upon closing "Customize"
may be even less predictable, buttons other than the ones deleted will
disappear. The problem is different from the much-discussed issue of
Normal.dot not being saved on exit. In my case, the changes revert, or
buttons disappear as soon as I close the Customize window. Is this also
Acrobat-related? What to do?
Thanks in advance.

Check out the customization context ("Save in" in the Customize dialog).
Sometimes you're making changes to the toolbars in Normal.dot, while the
toolbars displayed are being supplied by another template.

Thanks, but it didn't work. I changed "save in" to the current document, but
the problem persists. I also tried to save with the customization dialog
open (by clicking file save or Shift+file and "Save All") but these commands
do not work until the Customize dialog is closed, and then the toolbar
reverts to its old self.
Can you think of something else? I would cancel the Acrobat installation if
I knew how to edit the Windows registry....

It's not the current document that is at issue but the current template. I
still think the customization context must be the cause of the problem.

Have you been modifying the Word toolbars, or are you using the preferred
option of a custom toolbar? If the former, you may have corrupted the
registry entry where these are stored - backup the registry data key (so you
can replace it if this doesn't cure it) then delete it - see
http://www.gmayor.com/my_toolbars_are_missing.htm. You will have to rebuild
your toolbars and some other personalisations, but this will give you the
opportunity to use a custom toolbar for your personal changes.
I don't think Acrobat is the issue here, but you can disable it - see
http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adobe_acrobat_toolbar.htm

Yes! I was changing an existing toolbar. Now I defined a new one, "Macros",
and everything works as it should. Thanks!
