Lots of ways..you do not need to use themes. What you probably need for a
banner is a good image editing program (Paintshop, Photoshop, etc.) You then
can design any type of image you would like. For navigation you can simply
create text links, or do other types of things with image swaps on mouseover
(need 2 or more images to start with for that) but it is always good to have
text links at a minimum.
