custom design templates will not show a previw

When I create a new custom designed presentation, save it as a template, then
try to use it for a new presentation, the template itself is available for
use, but there is no preview picture in the design templates pane. The
message in the pane gives the name of the template, but also a message saying
"preview not available". I have a client who needs to see a preview rather
than text.

I have the same issue and "save preview picture" IS checked for the template.

Also how do I send a template to somebody and have them install it so they
can use it?

Forgot to mention, Office 2003, WinXP Pro

No I crteated using PP 2003. The source PP file is not mine but I think my
friend used PP 2003. I'll have to check. I looked at the properties of the
POT file and I don't see anything that looks strange. I have Office 2007 but
have NOT installed it as of this date but hope to do so in the very near
future, anything I should be aware of before I install? I plan to install on
my current laptop (IBM T43p, Intel Pentium M 2.26, 2GB memory, 100GB HD 14GB
free but I can free up more)

Have there been changes to the slide master, or were elements just pasted
onto slides themselves?

Also, the original post said this: The message in the pane gives the name
of the template, but also a message saying "preview not available".

Is that what you also see? I can't seem to reproduce it here. Hm.

I am having the same problem. I did not see an answer in this thread. To
recap, running PPT 2007 under WinXP Pro, i go to new the Office button; click
on New, My Templates and click on the name of the custom template i
developed. The New Presentation popup window says, "Preview not available."
I right click on the template file name and click on Properties. I do not
see any box i can enable that says "show template preview" or anything like
that. Any advice/help most appreciated. Thanks

Did you make changes, by chance, to the Title Slide Layout?

apparently you didn't see my question responding to your post from a couple
of days ago asking if you made changes to the title slide layout (in Master
View). I'd still like to know the answer to that.

to see doc properties in PPT 2007, turn on the developer tab (Office button
| PPT Options | Popular tab).

On Dev tac, click document panel.

In document panel, click document properties | Advanced.

On the Summary tab, make sure you have save preview picture selected.

Sorry about not fully replying to your question.

Yes, i did make changes to the Title Slide Layout. Those changes appear on
the title slide in PPT. I am beginning to get a better understanding/feel
for how the template works in PPT 07. I'll muddle through.

I enabled the Developer tab per your instructions. On the Dev tac, i did
not see a document panel. There is a Controls panel; but the Properties
button is grayed out. Any advice appreciated. Thanks, Tuck

Yes, i did make changes to the title slide master. They show up on the title

Following your instructions, I enabled the "show developer tab at the

Advice appreciated. Thanks.

On Dev tac, click document panel.

There's a document panel button on the Developer tab. Click it. Then click
OK when prompted.

Thank you for the information on the changes to the title slide layout
master. I think there's a bug in PPT 2007 where, if you make certain changes
to it, you don't get a template preview. Or maybe it's a theme preview. I
can't remember the details -- I'll have to find my notes on it.

It's just a button that shows up automatically when I turn on the Developer
tab. I don't have to open a file or anything. Here's a quick Jing screengrab
of it. http://www.screencast.com/t/ZEd2AlX2UEq (Sorry about the NPR noise in

Aha! Steve Rindsberg and I were checking this, and it seems that not all
Office Editions have this button. Sorry, I didn't know that.

So...go to Office Button | Prepare | Properties to open the document panel.
From there click document properties | advanced and go to the Summary tab.
