Custom Animation in PowerPoint 2003

Hi.
Having trouble with creating Custom Animation in PowerPoint 2003.
Not a problem for inserted text, but having a hard time with Excel graphs.
I have not yet see an easy way to create Custom Animation in PowerPoint 2003
for graphs created in Excel. As far I can see, it is necessary to create the
graph as picture, then break the graph into groups. And use these groups to
make Custom Animation.
Had a look at a PowerPoint presentation created in PowerPoint 2002 and it
was not necessary to contvert the graph into a picture and then break up the
graph.
So how can I do the same things in PowerPoint2003 as I did in
PowerPoint2002?
