Cursor switched, how to change back?

I was using Wordpad and when trying to correct an error, the cursor started
erasing as I was typing, instead of just adding more characters. Back many
years ago, when I was using my first computer, OK it was an Apple IIGS -
please don't start using those 4 letter words about Apple owners, I could
change the cursor to an overstrike cursor by pressing a certain combination
of keys. As this was many years ago, and oldsheimers is starting to set in, I
don't remember the combination, and it is probably different for Win XP
anyway. Is it still is changable? Maybe Word pad just got screwed up. When I
closed and reopened the document, the cursor started behaving normally. Any
suggestions would be apreciated. Thanks.

To the right of the main keyboard, you will see a key marked 'insert'..
press it once..

Thank you, I couldn't find that info anywhere in Microsoft. Maybe just
looking in wrong spot.
