cursor and delete issues

help - my delete action in Word documents (I am a Mac user) is working in the wrong direction but only on documents that have been generated or e-mail attachment by someone else. Even if I copy the text to a new document, if I insert the cursor to make a correction and deletion to the left of the cursor that works but as I continue typing it removes everything to the right of the insertion one letter at atime as I type. How do I make this normal? Help!:

press the insert button. it's function is to toggle inserting text without over writing and inserting text while over writing. you are experiencing the latter.
