I can't figure out this new feature. When I use it, it seems to show up only
on that one page, not as a h/f on all pages. When I try it in an existing
header/footer, it eliminates the exisitng h/f, even tho it's not supposed to.
Can someone give me a clue. I need to explain it to some people tomorrow.
I thought I had it figured out, and now I realize I don't. Thank you.

Note that each Word section can have up to three different headers (and
footers). And when you insert the page number in the current position, it
will only be added to the header (or footer) containing the insertion point.

For example, if the insertion point is in a first page header when you add
the page number, the other header(s) of the same section will not be
affected. If there are multiple sections, you may see the page number in the
first page header of the other sections, assuming that those headers are
linked (which they are by default on creation).

For more on headers and footers, see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/HeaderFooter.htm.

If contents disappear, you probably had it selected. Make sure that you have
nothing selected when you insert the page number.

I just had to adjust a Header for the first time in Word2007 and found
it awfully complicated -- is there someplace where all the buttons
that used to be on the H&F Toolbar are gathered, so you can easily
just insert a page number, format it, unlink from previous, etc.,
without having to wrestle with all those useless pre-formatted
headers?

The Header & Footer Tools Design tab of the ribbon is similar to the Header
and Footer toolbar of Word 97--2003.

I don't think there is a way to get rid of the galleries, though... Of
course, you could insert the PAGE field manually.

Almost all the buttons are there, but interspersed with a bunch of
extra stuff ... and the most basic one of all, Insert Page, takes
three operations instead of one click! (Inserting PAGE manually takes
at least six keystrokes, from Insert Field through Toggle Field Code.)

You can make use of the InsertPageField command (press Alt+Shift+P) to
insert a page field at the insertion point.

Ah, there's a good one!

That one is new to me as well. Unfortunately, for me it opens the Windows
Media Player. But Ctrl+F9, type PAGE between the brackets is simple enough.

Ah, there's a good one!

But note that you can use the Customize Keyboard dialog box to assign a
shortcut to the InsertPageField command.

Indeed. And a good idea in Word 2007, where MS has made the option so much
less accessible.
