The first 26 sub-folders in my Windows folder are
entitled '$NtUninstallKB....'. The '....' is a six digit
number followed by another '$' sign.
These files take up a lot of space and I'm wondering if
they relate back to the installation and if the could be
deleted.
Your advice, please.

These relate to previous updates. I've deleted a number
of the older folders since there are now SP1 and SP2
updates.

They relate to win updates, KB........ being the hotfix number, if you
delete them, you cannot then uninstall the update, should you need so to do.

These are uninstall folders created when windows update installed an
update. They are there if you need to uninstall the update from the
Add/remove programs applet in Control Panel. If your system is working
fine, then you can delete these files, but you won't be able to remove
the update after that. Once these files are deleted you can also remove
the reference to each update in add/remove programs. See this link for
an automated way to remove the uninstall directories and the entries in
Add/Remove programs:

Win XP Utilities, then Remove Hotfix Backup files.
