ctrl+p does not work

For some reason the shortcut key ctrl+p to print does not work in any
of my normal apps, like internet explorer, word, excel, firefox, etc. I am
running WinXP sp2 and office 2003. I ran all the windows and office updates
recently and still no luck. All the other shortcut keys still work fine,
like ctrl+c (copy) or ctrl+v (paste).

I've installed tweakui and customized some settings. But I could not find
any tweakui setting relating to shortcut keys or print functions. Could I
have done something wrong in tweakui?

Can anyone help? Thanks.

- What exactly to you expect to happen when you press Ctrl+P?
- Did you program this yourself? If so, using what facility?

I suggest you have a look at the native Windows keyboard
shortcuts here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q126449,
then reconsider your use of Ctrl+P.

Ctrl-p is a standard Windows application print dialog shortcut. The OP
clearly states it is an application shortcut. Where have you been
hiding?

TweakUI does have a command-key editor, but it should be restricted to
the Windows OS interface. Take a look at Word/Tools
menu/Customize/Keyboard and see if the ctrl-p has been somehow removed
from there.

In any of the apps that the OP mentions if you click File>Print you will
see Print with the P underlined and ctrl+p to the right.
_MVP what a joke_.

I've only seen Ctrl+P hijacked on one system and it was years ago. It was
due to a program that had been installed that used Ctrl+P for a different
function. Theoretically that should only change the function within that
application but instead nuked Ctrl+P in all other applications.

Performing a system rebuild and testing Ctrl+P after every software install
finally pinpointed the program that was responsible. Unfortunately, it was
a customized program for their workplace. Their workaround was to add
printer icons to toolbars where they could or use File> Print.

Not very helpful with your problem but at least you will know that it is
not a predicament that is completely unheard of.

I've checked Word and it's fine. There were no keyboard customizations.
Also, the ctrl+p is a standard shortcut key for many other apps, like ie,
excel, firefox, etc. And the ctrl+p shortcut does not work on my pc for
these other apps either.

Do you know if the settings for the shortcut keys are stored in the registry
or a file somewhere that can be checked?

Thanks.

Hello,

Do you know if the settings for the "standard" shortcut keys are stored in
the registry or a file somewhere? Or is it built in to the OS and
unchangeable?

Thanks.

Don't know for sure but if I had to guess I would say they are built in.

I have the same problem. Has anyone found a solution yet? I'm new to this,
but what's the point if we don't find a solution?

Paul, there was a series of posts around the same time in various windowsxp
newsgroups. Most of the folks tracked down the problem to a program that
had usurped this keyboard shortcut. If that's what has happened on your
system your choice is to uninstall that software or use one of the
alternate methods of printing.
