What is the process CTFMON for? Why is it so persistent, in adding itself to
the startup process? (I keep disabling it in Startup, using different
startup monitors, but something keeps adding it again.)

What is CTFMON for?

ctfmon.exe = CTF Loader. Part of Microsoft Office. It activates
the Alternative User Input Text Input Processor (TIP) and the Microsoft
Office XP Language Bar.

When you run a Microsoft Office XP program, the file Ctfmon.exe (Ctfmon)
runs in the background, even after you quit all Office programs.

Ctfmon.exe monitors the active windows and provides text input service
support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard,
translation, and other alternative user input technologies.

To prevent Ctfmon.exe from running, follow these steps.

Ctfmon.exe is not only a part of MS Office -- but also a native WinXP
program, instead of the old INTERNAT.EXE. It is using as well as the
keyboard layout indicator (for those who work with more than one
language -- say, as in my case, English and Russian).

.
CTFMon comes with Microsoft Office XP and Windows XP -
it activates the Alternative User Input Text Input
Processor (TIP) and the Microsoft Office XP Language
Bar. As long as the Text Services & Speech are
enabled in the Control Panel, this program will force
itself back into your list of background programs.

if you want
Disable "Text Services & Speech" in the Control Panel
if you are not using them. Then, disable CTFMon using
Startup Manager. (Note that if you use Word, Excel or
PowerPoint to write in different languages, eg. English
and Arabic, then you will be using "Text Services &
Speech" facilities).

What about different European languages, like English, Spanish, German? To
use the Spanish spelling and grammar checker (with US English version of
Office 2003), does that use CTFMon?

Although I mostly write in English, I have my keyboard set to US
International, which makes for easier use of some non-English European
characters, such as ¿ á ü etc., for my occasional use of them. Does the
US International Keyboard require CTFMon?

The KB articles say that CTFMon doesn't use much resources, isn't a problem
to have running all the time. Have people found that to be the case? Have
they found that background program to cause any problems, any conflicts with
other programs, etc.?
