csrss resource hog

Thomas

I am using an Athlon XP 1800+ with i GB of RAM. crss.exe
hovers around 4 MB at all times. I'm sure you tried the
latest drivers for your card?

I hope someone has run across the solution to this
problem, as I've had no luck trying to fix it. Whenever I
cause an event that requires some significant screen
redraw, or I've moved the pointer a lot, csrss.exe shoots
to about 95 - 99% CPU usage and my machine hangs for about
4 to 5 seconds. This isn't a debilitating problem, but
has been vexing me for several months. I'm running WinXP
Pro on an AMD processor running at 900 MHz with a GForce
FX 5200 with 128 MB, and I didn't have this issue with the
same setup running on a PIII running at 450 MHz with a
GForce 4200 MMX with 64 MB. I've scanned for viruses and
spyware, not finding any, and have turned off virtually
every non essential service trying to resolve this
problem. The following is a list of the programs
executing on my machine:

Running processes:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe

Any help would be appreciated. I've done a reformat and
reinstall, but that didn't seem to help. I'm reaching my
wits end, and really don't want to have to switch to
another OS, but at this point I'm about ready.

Thank you for the suggestion Thomas. I just went through
and reinstalled all my drivers, and got the last two
windows updates I hadn't yet downloaded (although when I'm
ever going to watch Snow White or need to convert Euros I
don't know). Still no improvement. About every 30
seconds or so, my system freezes up for about 4 to 5
seconds. I've had to turn off all acceleration on my
video card or my computer will completely freeze, not even
responding to the three fingered salute. After I do a
hard reboot, there isn't even an error noted in the error
logs, at least that I can find. ARRGH!! I'm about ready
to shove my boot through this peice of machinery.
