cryptographic service not running

I can't install SP4 (or any win updates, sp4 is already installed but since
I can't run any updates, I thought I'd rerun sp4, but no dice!). The error
states that "setup could not verify the integrity of the file update.inf.
Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer".
I checked every service and no service is titled with "cryptographic" in it.
I tried to run the Kerberos Key Distribution Center but it said "Error 1352:
The security account manager (SAM) or local secirity authority LSA server
was in the wrong state to perform the security operation". I started almost
every service that I thought could help but nothing has helped, can run the
Kerberos service, can't install sp4, and can't run win update. I posted my
issue with the win update to the win update NG.
Any help with either will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

That article is helping but I'm not fixed yet. Basically I can't start the
cryptographic services becasue the machine says that it is not installed. I
don't see it in the services mmc at all. How do I install it? I went to
the dialog that allows you to install other win apps (like IIS, etc) and it
was not anywhere there, except perhaps the certificate server, but I've
never installed that before and haven't had a problem in the past....
Thanks

I was looking in the event viewer and noticed that I had some bad disk
errors on the c drive, so while I was trying to figure out the win update
issues, I ran scan disk, it found the bad blocks, evidently it moved the
data, and now it seemed to work, that is, I again tried to run win update
and it worked. Interesting that a bad disk block would show up as a
cryptography problem. I still don't have a cryptography service though, but
the win update runs, and was the objective.
Thanks
