Across Lite is an excellent program for crossword buffs. It allows you
to solve virtually thousands of puzzles in one of two ways. First, you
can play the puzzles that are included in this download. Many more of
these special files are available for download at the author's Web
site. Second, you can go to many other Web sites, (including
washingtonpost.com) and solve additional puzzles on-line. Indeed,
Across Lite functions as a standalone program as well as a "helper" to
Internet Explorer, Navigator and other supported browsers. Regardless
of how you play, this program makes crossword puzzles much more
enjoyable.
Across Lite displays crossword puzzles on its user-friendly interface.
Additionally, there are panels dedicated to the clues that are in the
across and down columns. By clicking a clue, the program highlights the
appropriate section on the grid. You can then type in a word using
either a "pen" or "pencil," depending on your confidence. As you enter
letters on the grid, Across Lite intuitively highlights the clue for
the opposite crossword. Though you'll find it very easy to solve these
crosswords on your PC, you may print them out.
Across Lite is a nice alternative to newspaper crosswords, mostly
because you don't have to wait a week to receive the solution. The
program can reveal correct, incorrect and selected letters. If you'd
rather not spoil the puzzle, it can simply indicate if there are any
correct letters.

It was an old idea of Wikiz to create something that could o the most
black job designing crosswords. Till this version, the were allready
two attempts, prototypes of CroswMaker, created, but ideas and name is
everything that left of them. Though we are still working hard on
CroswMaker, we can unassumingly say that for it's features CroswMaker
will distinguish from a small group of simmilar applications.
CroswMaker runs under Win9x/Me/NT/2000, and will surely work in any
computer having these OS. In a slower computers, you will only notice
slower searching or navigating biger crosswords.
There would be too little space to describe all features of CroswMaker,
but briefly about main ones:
- Crosswords can be any size;
- Word layout is completely free. Every letter is a separate unit in a
crossword grid, so you can design oblique, intermittent or intersecting
with themselves words;
- Words can be typed-in with keyboard or filled in from libraries;
- Word searchin is completely controled by user and can find all
possible combinations for templates you design. You can stop search,
review results, delete the ones you're not satisfied with, select
combination you're most satisfied with or continue searching.
- Word libraries are organized into one big tree - you can arrange them
into categories, categories of categories and so on.
- Sharing features: importing, exporting- you can send library you made
for other people or receive them and add to your library tree.
- National symbol support: there's no problem designing crosswords
containing other letters than latin.
- Export of crosswords to text and graphic files.
- Nice and unusual user interface makes job more comfortable;
- Multiple document editing, application configuring for user needs.

Crossword Compiler - 124+279 KB
I wrote this crossword compiler to automatically create crosswords
having specialized printouts. Haven't gotten around to doing the
printout part. There are commercial crossword compilers that have more
features like starting with pre-selected words. This one will fill the
15 x 15 grid in a few seconds average time using a public-domain word
list of 74,673 words. (I need a better list, with the obscure words
weeded out.) I've made this downloadable. With this one you need to
also download the file joecap22.txt and put it in the same subdirectory
as the executable when you run the program. This is the word file that
the program uses to select the words from to fill the grid.

Henry Casson's Crossword Utility allows you to compose crossword grids
with blocks or bars. These can be printed directly or be copied into a
Word page. Grid creation allows for 90 degree symmetry and automatic
numbering. Moreover, grids can be saved as text, pasted into an email
and be opened by a recipient who has the same software. This latest
version has lots of extra features, including a colour choice and
printer selection facility. This version 3.1 allows the creation of
larger grids (up to 30 x 30), bar-thickening, easy solution entry,
saving grids as bmp images, improved solution entry, improved grid
copying and lots of extras. When you have designed the diagram use the
mouse to open the grid-filling option. This is freeware. Latest version
