Can you create a cross reference manually?
Yes, insert a bookmark at the point you want to refer to, and insert a REF
field containing the bookmark's name at the point where you want the
reference.
The cross-reference feature on the Insert menu simply automates that process
by letting you identify a reference point and inserting a hidden bookmark
there. If you right-click one of these cross references and select Toggle
Field Code, you'll see the bookmark name, something like _Ref123456; and if
you check the "Hidden bookmarks" box in the Insert > Bookmark dialog, you
can see the same bookmark name.
If you want your manual cross reference to use the page number instead of
the text of the item, use a PAGEREF field instead of a REF field. There are
also switches you can use in the field code to get other information about
the reference point -- look up "REF field code" in the Help.
