Cross-Reference Dialog Box - Options Gray Out

We are using Office 2003. One of our users found that when she's working on
cross references, after selecting two or three of them, the available
paragraphs, sections, etc. used for cross referencing will gray out. The
only way to resolve this issue is to close the cross reference dialog box and
reopen it. Needless to say, this isn't a very efficient use of time when
cross referencing a large document. Is this a known issue or is there a way
to resolve this?

Can you reproduce this in a new document? If so, it is *possible* that it is
related to the bug described in the following KB article:

The scroll bar in the Cross-reference dialog box becomes unavailable in Word
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892420/en-us

The only work-around suggested is to close and reopen the dialog box.

Thank you Stefan. The documents that this happens on are quite large and it
fits the criteria in the article you referenced - it makes sense that if the
scroll bar disappears or is not available, that other options would gray out
too.
