cross reference dialog box empty

I have a document I am updating that I did not author.

It has cross-references in the text that are linked to figures and tables etc.

When I go to add a cross-reference the dialog box is completely empty for
the figure and table pull-down options.

Any ideas?

Maybe the author didn't use the Caption style for the figure and table
titles.

If worst comes to worst, go to each figure or table, select it, and do
Insert > Reference > Caption (it'll ask you whether you want it above
or below, and it knows the difference between figures and tables), and
copy the existing text of the label into the newly made paragraph.
Then you can do proper hyperlinked cross references.

Note that you must create the captions via the Caption dialog box if there
should be entries for figures and tables in the Cross-reference dialog box.
And note that if custom captions (or the built-in captions of a different
language) has been used, they won't be recognized by your version of Word,
unless you first create the captions (via the Caption dialog box).
