Critically Loc disk

My one-year old C drive is running critically low. I've deleted rarely used
programs and files, used Disk Cleanup and defrag, disactivated Hibernation
and reduced the size of Sys. Restore disk, and still it has dwindled to the
extreme. I have noticed it disappears dramatically when I download large
files on my D drive for work (a weekly occurrence), but how can I stop this
from happening? I have moved everything I could to the D drive already.
I've searched everywhere and I don't understand what's using up this space.
My total C drive capacity is 13.9 GB (I have 844 MB left after taking all
the steps above) and my D drive total capacity is 91.8 GB with 35 GB left.
With a combined total of over 100 GB (it was sold by Sony as having 120 GB
total, by the way, so that’s already a lie) and the computer barely a year
old, I didn't expect to run out of space so fast.
When I try and see where this memory has gone by adding up all the folder
sizes, it doesn't add up, so whatever is chewing the space is hidden... Not a
virus either, I do daily updates and regular scans.
Is there anything I can do apart from changing the HD? I'm upset that I ran
out so fast, this computer wasn't cheap and I work on it 10 hrs/day. Also,
why do they make the main drive (C) smaller than the other one (D in this
case). How does that make sense when it carries all the OS programs? I'm no
expert, but something seems wrong... Heeelp! I can’t lose work because of
this and can’t afford another computer.

Hello Milenka,

The first thing I would do is trying to figure out when my disk size is
occupied.
Windows XP/2000 contains an monitoring tool which can help you. It can be
found via “startâ€, “settingsâ€, “control panelâ€, “administrative tool†and is
called “performanceâ€. Just start it. Here you can make monitor the free bytes
on your disks. Right click in the graphic window, select “Add counters†and
add the logical disk, C, free Megabytes, and D, free megabytes. Change the
sampling rate via field “Sample automatically every†reachable via right
click in the graphic window “propertiesâ€, tab “general†and set it to about
900 seconds. Leave the program running during your normal activities.
Now you can see when your disk space is consumed, and by looking what you
are doing at that moment you can get a hit about the guilty program.

Success,
Filip.

If you didn't use the shift/del you should empty the recycle bin. As far as
total disk space.... That sounds about right. Disk mfg size and os disk
sizes will be different. Disk Mfg use 1GB = 1000000000, the os uses the
traditional method 1GB = 1073741824.
