Where can I go to manually download all of the critical updates for Windows
XP Pro to Service pack 2? I need to deploy all of the updates to several
machines on a single network on dial up.

Will service pack 1a have all of the critcal updates that were available
immediateley prios to SP2's release?

SP2 is available at the Microsoft Download Center
(standalone "network" version, 266 MB):

No, the critcal updates released after SP1a is not backported into
SP1a. All those updates are now covered by SP2

....with reference to the "network" version; I just downloaded the 97MB SP2 to
my mobile as that's what MS Update prompted, is this lesser version less
desirable? ( I run my laptop on a LAN at work but just for Internet & mail
access ).

That is customised as just the items found needed for that particular
machine. So you cannot use it on another, and it would be inappropriate
if you were to reinstall XP on this machine, thus needing a different
set because you had not already done some updating
