The only critical update still being offered me, yet I'm confused as to why.
If it only repeats all the previous critical updates, does it make sense to
install it on top? What are savvy XP users doing with regard to this
"patch"?

Even if you had the knowledge to do what you wanted, it's called "reverse
engineering", and is strictly prohibited per the terms of your license to
use your copy of Windows XP.

I don't think you understood what I was asking.
My question was why I should download and install from the Windows Update
site a patch that contains updates previously downloaded and installed on my
computer.
When the Update site scans my computer it tells me that there is one
remaining critical update that I should download and install. The
"cumulative patch," that I've been asking about.
Is that clearer?

This hapened because Windows are stuped program.
I update XP with SP1a but when I look in system I have only SP1 update why
not SP1a.
I update before all critical updates but when Microsoft check my system I
get message that I must update my system again. I say that is Chain stupid
system.
(e-mail address removed)

Well since nobody is actually answering the question your asking I will.
In some cases yes the update is repeating other updates BUT also includes
something new.
It isn't going to hurt anything for you to just install it and be done with
it however you do have the option through the Windows Update website for it
to not show you this update again.
Use Advanced Settings on the Update Website to acheive this if that is what
you want to do.
But, I recommend, just instaling the update.

If you're into updtates, then it cant hurt to download/install it.

Your reply is ambiguous. My original question was what savvy XP users did
with regard to a "cumulative patch" that contains all previously insatlled
patches. You say that if I am "into updates," then it won't hurt to install
it.
Do you mean to imply that YOU are not "into updates"?

Thank you for this clear and straightforward answer. I will take you advice
and "just install" and be done with it.

An interesting question. The download manually option offers a file that is
9MB, whereas the same cumulative patch from Windows Update is 282 KB.
How is this difference explained?

The 282 KB is just a stub, which manages the subsequent download of the
rest of whatever your particular machine needs. The 9 MB includes
everything, which yours or any other particular machine could possibly
require in relation to this particular patch.

!!! Marked place
I didn't know you could do that to the "Critical and important" section??
I know you can do it to Languages and to Optional and to Drivers, but......
