Critical Stop Sound Every 5 Minutes!!!

This is driving me crazy - I can't figure out why the critical stop sound
goes off every 5 minutes. Only the sound, no warning windows or popups
associated with the sound. I've run antivirus and an assortment of
spyware/malware software and nothing comes up. There's nothing logged in
event viewer that is every 5 minutes to point me in the right direction. Any
suggestions? I have Windows XP Media Center w/SP3. This has been happening
for 2 days.

How often does Outlook Express check for mail? If every five minutes,
there might be a cause associated with that occurrence.. somewhere to
start your search anyway.. If you always have mail, the mail
notification sound might have changed on you, or maybe there's a problem
with one of the accounts.

Open Task Manager and close down some processes, as a test, to narrow
down the cause.

Thank you - I unchecked some things that loaded on startup and one of them
was the culprit. Haven't had the problem since. I did an internet search on
every entry I wasn't sure about and when they didn't sound like I needed
them I got rid of them. So, unfortunately, I can't be sure which one was
actually the problem. I guess I should have tried one at a time but I didn't
feel like rebooting multiple times.

I don't use Outlook Express for my mail, only for newsgroups. I use Outlook
2007 for my mail, and it is set to check every 5 minutes, so I did think of
that possibly being the problem. But, the critical stop sound would play
without having any programs open. I'm just glad it's gone - hearing that
every 5 minutes was driving me crazy!!!

Thanks again!!
