Critical error during SP2 update - advice please

DavidM

Eventually got around to updating XP Home from SP1 to SP2 using
a Microsoft CD (from a magazine). Closed all programs, inc
Zone Alarm and virus checker while running it.
All seemed to go ok until the final stage - "cleaning up", when
I got the "Windows has encountered an error and needs to close"
window appear! Sent the report off to MS, then rebooted the system.
Took a while to load, but no error messages, and so far things seem
to work, and System Information now reports SP2 installed.

Is there anything I can do to check the integrity of my system - don't
want to find a disaster further downstream?

(I do have a restore point AND a disk image of C: from immediately
before the SP2 update was run so can always restore this if necessary).

Grateful for any advice.
David.

Can you provide some details regarding the actual error? It should
be shown in one of the categories in Event Viewer (right-click on My
Computer and select Manage).

Good luck

Hi Ron,

I have two Application Errors about the time the update failed:

"Faulting application update.exe, version 5.5.1005.0, faulting module
ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.1217, fault address 0x00055e92."

followed by:

"Fault bucket 131564205."

There are no System Errors reported.

Is this any help?

Since the update I'm now seeing quite a variety of errors under both

System and Application, so I think my PC is definately "unwell".
