Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1

I have two PCs with Windows XP Professional running.

I recently installed a Creative Sound Blaster Live!
on my main machine, with the
accompanied Creative software. Due
to unresolved conflicts, I decided to
remove the card, uninstall the
software and install it all onto a
secondary machine I have of a similar
spec. Thius worked fine in the second machine.

Upon removal from the first machine,
the only sound files my main machine
will play are .mid (MIDI) files.
The Microsoft Media player launches for .wav
files and if I attempt to play an audio CD, looks as
if it is playing them but no sound to
my speakers. The fact that I can hear .mid files suggests that the hardware
layer is fine and that I missing something frolm Windows XP (?).

I have tried to remove all possible
entries in the Registry, settings in H'W Manager and even BIOS relating
to "Creative", "Blaster", "SBLive" and MPU401
etc. but with no progress on fixing my
problem of not having sound.

Any assistance you could provide would
be appreciated as I did not set
a "Restore Point" and don't really
want to reinstall Windows if I can
avoid it.

The AC'97 indicates onboard sound. Did you remember to go into the BIOS
and enable onboard sound?

Hello Malke,

I thought that I had but cheched to be sure, and yes I had, however somehow
the Sound Blaser was also enabled eventhough I had disabled it. Also
another of creative entries, MPU 401, was enabled when I know I had disabled
it. I do not have the creative card or its software on the machine (except,
I suppose thouse entries left when the uninstall was done).

I'm talking about enabling/disabling in the *BIOS*, not in Windows. When
you first start your computer, you will see a prompt at the bottom of
the screen that says something like, "Press DEL to enter Setup". The
keypress varies from BIOS to BIOS - it might be F12, or F2, or
something else. In any case, press the necessary key and *carefully*
look at the settings for onboard chips. You are looking for onboard
sound and you want to make sure it is *enabled*. Then save your changes
(instructions how to do this are usually at the bottom of the screen)
and now your onboard sound should work. Do *not* change anything else
in the BIOS unless you know exactly what you are doing.

If this sounds daunting or confusing, have a knowledgeable friend or
professional help you.

Raymondo, I've had lots of Creative pci cards and I've never seen one
that was capable of enabling/disabling the onboard PCI sound in the
BIOS. However, if you think so... then what is the answer to: is the
onboard sound enabled in the BIOS? If it isn't, your AC'97 won't work.

Malke, Yes the on board sound is enabled in the BIOS. Also the AC97 is set
as the default audio.

In Device Manager, under View - set to Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall/remove all sound devices. Every single one of them. Reboot
the machine and it should find the AC'97. Make sure you've plugged your
speakers into the correct input on the motherboard.

Malke, thank you for your input. This worked fine after some "Safe Mode"
driver reinstall. Thanks again.
