Creation of an AD Account with an Existing Email Account

We have a situation where one of our User's Active Directory Account got
deleted, but not his Exchange Account. Is there a way to re-create the AD
account, without creating a new email account? Our user has a fairly large
mailbox that he would like to get to, so we don't just want to delete it and
have the new AD account create the email account again.

what version of exchange?
is his mailbox cached locally?
