I have created a template from an existing document, however I would like to
be able to tab through the document to change information as needed, such as
names, dates without having to re-do the entire document. I tried to use
macro, but still cannot seem to get it to work. If anyone has any
information on this it would be greatly appriciated. I am using Word 2003.

It sounds like you want to create a protected form. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/FillinTheBlanks.htm and especially
the forms tutorials by Dian Chapman that this article links to.
