Need some suggestions on how to create a slide show from several hundred
jpegs in My Pictures folder. The directions indicate to START-->click MY
PICTURES and use the slide show toolbar buttons to play the pictures.

When I attempt this (using XP-Pro), I do not get the slideshow toolbar. Even
if I move the pointer across the screen as per the directions, the slideshow
toolbar does not appear in the upper-right corner of the screen or anywhere
else on the screen.

Any suggestions would be helpful. TIA, Michael S.

While it is true that PowerPoint is a decent tool for creating slideshows,
it is far from being necessary to create a slide show. My favorite tool
for doing this job is a free program called IrfanView. You can find it
and links to download a copy at: http://www.irfanview.com/

Hi Bob T.

I don't use PowerPoint all that often - perhaps 5 days a week. If you think that Irfanview is superior to PowerPoint, I will bow to your superior knowledge.

go to the My Pictures directory, double-click on an image to load Picture &
Fax Viewer
click on the 5th icon at the bottom, or press F11 to start a slideshow of
all the pics in this directory

Hi

If you want produce a slideshow, you would need to install PowerPoint either
as a standalone product or as part of an Office Suite:

Will--thanks for the suggestion, but I have PowerPoint--was wanting
something simple that could create self-running CDs of photos to give to
friends that do not have PowerPoint.

Will,

Maybe I read too much into your post. I interpreted it as the only way to
make a slide show would be to use PowerPoint. I also use PowerPoint
quite often but I got the impression that the original poster was looking
for a simple method. IrfanView can create simple standalone executable
slide shows that you can copy to a CD and give away. It can also create a
simple screen saver out of your pictures and display them as a slide show.

IrfanView does not have the elaborate editing features and large selection
of transistion effects that PowerPoint offers. If you want to create a
professional looking presentation with sound, animations, and various
transition effects then PowerPoint is the way to go. If all you need is a
simple slide show that can be made into a standalone executable, then
IrfanView may be a better choice.

Another advantage to IrfanView compared to many other programs is its
size. The download is less than 1MB which makes it something that even
dialup users can download without any problems.

Keeping it simple and only with what should be in XP-Pro, though I have
XP-Home so cannot be absolutely sure.

When you have My Pictures open it should be in two panes, the right with the
list of the files and the left should have headings of:
Picture Tasks, File and Folder Tasks, Other Places, and Details. Expand the
Picture Tasks Heading and you
should see View as a slide show. Click on it and the screen should go black
with the pictures on that file shown one at a time. Now if you move the
mouse the slide show toolbar will show in upper right.

Sometimes the folder 'My Pictures' forgets that it is "special" containing
pictures (for instance if at some time you deleted it and manually made it
again its special status may be gone). Others here will help you get it back
as a special folder if that turns out to be the problem.
