Creating a customized toolbar (ruler) for word 2007 macros

I have created a template in word XP with macros. To activate the macros
while working with WORD I have created a toolbar (ruler) with buttons. each
button activates a different macro.

Now I need to convert the template from WORD XP to WORD 2007, The customized
toolbar appears under "Addings" in WORD 2007 and I can't change or manipulate
the toolbar or the macro names... can someone tell me how to do this please?

You cannot change the toolbar that appears in Add-ins using Word 2007. You
will have to make the changes in Word XP - see

You will have to use Word 2003 to modify toolbars created in that version;

Alternatively, add your macros to the Quick Access Toolbar in Word 2007. See

Can I delete the ruler and create a new customqpersonal ruler ... If so...

You can certainly hide Word's rulers: in Word 2007, click the View tab and
then clear the "Ruler" option in the Show/Hide group. However, you cannot
create your own. Why would you want to?

How do I change the: "For all documents (default)" only to the template I
want.... It was so easy in the earlier versions... and it is so frastrating
to me in this 2007!

You have to open the template as a document, for example via the Open dialog
box; that way you can save QAT changes to a particular file.

Note that QAT settings can only be saved in templates or documents saved in
the Word 2007 format.

Hi Iris,

Within Word 2007 there isn't a built in ability to modify the custom toolbars or menus stored in an earlier version of Word (in .doc
or .dot) files. The articles that Graham/Stefan linked to are the usual ways to approach this, if you want to be able to create or
modify a toolbar using drag and drop ability.

The other alternative is to customize the Ribbon itself to add custom tabs or to modify the existing items. This article is one
that you might want to try to see if it would be an approach you can use.

Thank you all for your help!!

It looks like what once was a simple thing has become - with the help of
microsoft - a pain in the... I have a lot to read and try in order to find
the best/easiest solution to my templates... wich needs to work with both XP
and 2007 versions.

The OP was using "ruler" to describe the Ribbon or a toolbar.

OK, thank you for clarifying this. Reading the OP's first message again, I
see that the terminology is actually explained there. It's even included in
the subject line, but I'm gradually realizing that I never read the subject
very carefully.
