Creating a Backup Set for Win XP to RW CD Drive

hodgers

When I am trying to create a new backup having recently
upgraded from Win 98 to WInXP, I try to start the back up
after selecting the "D:" drive as the location to backup
to via the wizard. I am receiving a message that I dont
have access to the "D:" drive when trying to start the
back up after selecting the D: Drive as the location to
back up to. The D: drive is a RW CD drive previously used
in Win 98.

I am able to drag and drop to the D: Drive in Explorer so
the PC is recognising the RW CD drive, however, I am
receiving the above message that I dont have access to
the "D:" drive when trying to start the back up.

Please help

Thanks

Hi,

WinXP's backup utility does not recognize CDRW's as a backup medium. You
would have to backup to hard drive and then copy the file to CDRW using
burning software. If you want to use CDRW's as a backup medium, you will be
better off with a third-party program.

Norton Ghost 2003 is an excellent app for creating a full system backup
directly to CD-R or CD-R/W. Ghost will auto span CDs as required It can be
run from a floppy or from the Windows environment. It even enables you to
make the first disk in the series bootable for the restore process.

If you simply want to use the Backup program that ships with XP to create
backups of individual files and folders (non system state backup) and you do
not need to create backups that are larger than a CD will hold then you can
use a work around as seen here
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/saving_files_to_cd.htm Because the Backup
program is not designed to work with CD media it has no way to auto span
disks and has no built in CD recording ability. The full version of the app
called Backup MyPC from www.stompinc.com does have CD/DVD writing
capabilities.
