create subweb problem FP2000

L

Larry

I am trying to follow article: How to apply password protection to part
of a FrontPage Web in FrontPage 2000 Article ID 301554.
I get as far as creating the subweb folder with it's contents but when I
right click the folder the 'convert to subweb' option is greyed out.
What do I need to do to enable it?

Does the folder name start with an underline (_)? Subwebs cannot have _ as
the first character in their names.

If you are editing on the server, does your host allow you to create
subwebs? Many do not.

But even if it is under another folder the choice to Convert to Web is not 'grayed out'. I've not been able to duplicate the OP.

The problem was that the folder started with an underscore. Fixed that &
now the convert to web option is available. Will now continue with the
exercise..thanks

I got exactly one step further hehe. On attempting to create the subweb
got the error:

Unable to create a disk-based web at "c:\webshare\mynameweb" because its
parent web would not be a disk-based web. Create the disk-based web
elsewhere, outside of your web server's hierarchy.

If I read that correctly it means a subweb cannot be below the 'parent'
folder of a web? So we have to create separate clusters of subwebs?

The 'parent' web is a sub-folder of c:\webshare and is not designated
as a web altho it functions as a disk-based web.. So how does one create
a subweb anyway? Create it elsewhere and move it to where you want it to be?

Welp...dunno if this is the proper way to do this...but this is how I've done it in the past when I've totally confusted myself to no end.

Open your local web - the one on your hd.
Create a folder File | New Folder name it whatever you want your subweb to be named.
Then, select that folder in Folder List and right click that...Convert To Web (it'll be empty)...then you can Import your stuff froma folder on your hd. OR Publish to it from your online server.

Yes, subwebs are really separate...but show up inside your main web on Folder List.

Usually this works, although sometimes I've had Permissions issues with doing it this way.

The error message indicates that at one time you accessed the webs using a
webserver. Webshare folder indicates FP98 or earlier.
Disc-based subwebs cannot be created in a server based web.
Either access your web using the webserver (using http://localhost) , or
publish the web to a folder on the hard disc, then you will be able to
create subwebs within it.

I am currently using FP2K but did use FP98 previously. I continued using
webshare as that's were my webs were. I am not using a server based web.
I have a number of webs on my local system all located beneath
'webshare'. I was trying to create a subweb in one of them. Why should I
have to publish a local web to my local hd [a waste of time]?
This issue indicates a FP problem. If I have a web with a sub-folder
that I wish to make into an independant subweb FP should be able to
determine the web status and create the sub-web within the current web.

The problem is that webserver you are no longer using.
FP98 uses Server based webs, and set up the webshare folder as a server
based web. Subsequent websites placed in this folder are also server based.
FrontPage 2000 and later are capable of opening Server based webs as disc
based. And everything will work perfectly until you try to create a new
web, or subweb. Fp cannot create a disc based subweb under a web created on
a server no matter how long you have been using the web as disc based.

Publishing the sites to another area of the hard disc removes the Server
elements from the webs, and allows disc based subwebs to be created. You
can then, if you wish, remove the webshare folder with Windows explorer.

The alternative is to start using the server again, and make all the webs
and subwebs server based.

Thanx Ronx,

If I understand what you mean - if I publish all current webs to a
folder i.e. C:\frontpagewebs\subfolder[1-n], I will still be able to
open webs in that folder, edit and publish as well as create subwebs
therein. (?)

It is sorta funny to think of FP shooting you in the foot just because
you used an earlier version -:)

Larry

Correct.

If you continue to use the webserver (if it is still installed) and open the
webs using http://localhost/webname you can use the webshare folder, without
moving the webs. However, you may need to update the webserver extensions
to FP2000 - they are probably still at FP98, which do not allow nested
subwebs. It will be easier to move the webs to disc based.

What you cannot do is mix server based with disc based.

Right.
You cannot create a disc based subweb in a web that was created on a server,
nor can you point a server root web at a folder that is in a disc based web
and expect it to work in FrontPage.
