How do I create a new file on the desktop in windows vista.

The options i have when I right-click--->new is not the file types i want to
create.

Is there a way to create new files without defining the type of the file
and then define it when you name the file?

Create it in whatever program you use, then Save As to the Desktop,
C:\Users\yourusername\Desktop.

Not all programs integrate with the desktop context menu (right-click).

Different programs have different file formats. The file extension merely
reflects the format, for example an .xlsx file is a Microsoft Excel file.
Naming/renaming a file's extension does not change the format, only what
program it is opened up in.
