"Create Mail" VERY SLOW

When I click on "Create Mail" the new send box opens right away, but it's
completely blank -- no fields, no menu or tool bars...nothing. It remains
blank for a good 10 seconds before everything shows up. This delay before I
can start typing my message is driving me nuts. Is this normal for WM or is
there some setting I can change to fix this?

It's not normal.
Try this fix for WM sluggishness:

If that doesn't fix it, your antivirus is probably interfering with WM.
