creat oem XP cd on a non-oem system?

I am trying to fix/replace a friends Sony Viao All-In_One computer. The LCD
display does not work but it boots up and one can access shared files on the
network so something is still working o.k.. He never created the media xp
boot cd and it is out of warranty. I pulled the hard drive and put in on
another computer, but when I tried to run the cd creater it said I had a
non-sony system and would not run.

What I wanted to do was to pull as much good stuff as possible from the
computer, P4 chip, memory, cd burner, hard drive with XP installed, etc. and
put it into a comparable P4 motherboard in a standard tower case. We have
the serial # for XP home and it is on the side of the system. Would that
serial# work on another XP Home cd?

Possibly I could boot up in safe mode on the new motherboard but I suspect
the cd create software will still not allow the xp home media to be
created??? I need the media to boot a repair install as I recall.

...thanks for any help..

BTW, the repair estimate was more then the ebay selling price of even NIB
systems.

The Sony OEM Product Key for Windows XP will only
work with the Sony restore method. It will not work or
activate on different hardware. When the Sony PC died,
so did the Sony license for Windows XP. You'll have to
go out and purchase a "Full Version" of Windows XP
and perform a "Repair Install" using the new Windows XP
CD and Product Key.
