Crawling startup with XP

My sister owns a year old Compaq Presario series6000
(384MB RAM) running XP with Norton Antivirus software
originally installed. Recently she got a message on her PC
that a virus had been detected & removed but that she
needed protection with McAffee. So, gullibly, she paid and
downloaded the new AV software. Since then the start-up
has never been the same. It now takes ages to load Windows
XP and all her programs when PC is switched on. I've have
uninstalled Norton AV thinking there must be a clash
between the 2 AV software and I've also opted for
selective start-up and weaned out any unwanted programs at
start-up, but it makes no difference.
Has anyone out there a solution. Many thanks.
