Crashing

I am running Windows XP Home Edition on a 1.5 year-old HP. Experiencing major
problems with crashing and blue screens. Sometimes I don’t even get booted up
before the next crash. Even crashes in safe mode.

Had serious Netsky problems last week – over 10,000 infected files. Took
care of those, but the problems persist. I can’t run Disk cleanup without
crashing, and can’t do a system restore because it won’t give me anything but
today’s date to restore to.

I don’t know where to go from here. Do I have any options short of
reformatting?

Sorry to say, if you didn't make backups of your info and that many files got
infected, probably not. Many times, the system restore gets hit with a virus
very quickly and has to be purged leaving your restore files useless. If you
had that many infected files, my guess is you didn't have a good anti virus
program running at the time. Backing up your pc onto other media like cd or
dvd is the best way to go, it saves alot of headache in these situations.
Look into a good anti virus program and Zone Alarm or some other firewall.
Win xp sp2 update would be a good idea also.
