Crashing PC - ant ideas..

D

DB

My pc keeps crashing at intermittent times......

The screen just goes black, like i've pulled the power lead out.........then
it all re-boots....
I haven't a clue as to what makes it do it.....but I do get the "your system
has recovered from an error" message and then it wants to send a copy to
Microsoft.
The error shows the following data......
C:\DOCUME~1\Dave\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERd475.dir00\Mini102807-03.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Dave\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERd475.dir00\sysdata.xml
I have scanned the system with AVG Anti-Spyware and also with AVG anti virus
but neither shows anything.
Have you got any ideas ?
Thanks
Dave :(

It could be a damaged system file. Start>Run>sfc /scannow checks all system
files and replaces any that are damaged. You will probably need your Windows
Install CD.

A copy of the Stop Error Report is needed.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure even after you have
solved the problem as it's better disabled. Check for variants of the
Stop Error message.

My PC was doing the same thing. It turned out to be a faulty power supply -
which showed up in the Hardware monitoring section of the BIOS.

Good Luck.

A copy of the Stop Error report is ideal but you should find a copy
giving similar information in the System log in Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

It's done it.........crashed I mean..........

I followed what you suggested..........but it gets very techie.........and i'm out of my league i think....

If I look at the Event Viewer via Control Panel........The System tab shows a red "X"...with the word error next to it.........if i double click on that then these words appear...

Error code 100000d1, parameter1 f000efe7, parameter2 00000002, parameter3 00000001, parameter4 f7bb0874

They dont mean a lot to me...any clues??

One thing I have just remembered is that about 2 months ago...when i tried to log on...it went to a BIOS password request screen, this had never happenend as I tent to keep away from the BIOS, i've tinkered with the easy stuff on it, but nothing else.....Now, as I didnt have a password i did what was reccomended in the manual.....opened up PC, removed battery from Mobo and the put it back together again........that was the last I saw of the password request screen........

Awful thought just enterred my head.....what if my other settings have all gone too (seems sort of likely!)......and something is re-setting because it may have the correct setting.

0x000000D1: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
(Click to consult the online Win XP Resource Kit article.)
The system attempted to access pageable memory using a kernel process
IRQL that was too high. The most typical cause is a bad device driver
(one that uses improper addresses). It can also be caused by caused by
faulty or mismatched RAM, or a damaged pagefile.
http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm

Was there any file name appearing after this line?
Error code 100000d1, parameter1 f000efe7, parameter2 00000002,
parameter3 00000001, parameter4 f7bb0874

What programmes were you running immediately before the problem
occurred?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What
drivers are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

What is your computer make and model?

What is your Windows XP CD as it is described on the face of the CD?

Gerry, Thanks for all your help....

I looked at Device Mangaer and it does have a yellow exclamation mark
against Multimedia Audio Controller. - my audio card is a SBlive5.1, its
served me well for years butI was thinking of taking it out as the onboard
sound will probably serve my needs.
If I leave it in, and get new drivers it could solve issues. The card must
be a good 4 years old now.

My PC is self built, Asus A7V8X-X motherboard, 1 gig memory, Radeon 9600
graphics card..SBliive5.1 Sound. Pioneer 108 DVD writer. Windows XP

Dave :)

I did the sigverif.exe and it showed two entries......one "freetdi.sys" and
the second is "pcouffin.sys".....i googled for both and theres plenty for
them.

missed this bit...it said....USBEHCI.SYS.....

What programmes were you running immediately before the problem occurred?
I was running a YOUTUBE Video,

We seem to have several candidates for being the troublemaker and given
that USBEHCI.SYS is mentioned in the Stop Error report it must be the
first one to look at. This driver was first distributed with the SP2
update and there seem to have been no updates. The normal way to replace
this driver would be to run System File Checker. Start, Run, type "sfc
/scannow" without quotes and hit Enter.

Does your original Windows XP CD incorporate the SP2. I have a horrible
suspicion you are going to say No! If the answer is No you will need to
slipstream your original CD and an SP2 CD to produce a CD combining
both. You can use any SP2 CD. These were freely issued by Microsoft in
2004. Many people having older computers have them.
http://www.winsupersite.com:80/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp

Multimedia Audio Controller -Can you put a name to the specific driver
and where it came from? Is it an original driver that came on on a CD
with the sound card?

Gerry,you're right.........my Windows XP cd doesnt incororate SP2...... i
dont have SP2 on cd, what I usually do if I do a re-install is to install
the Windows XP cd and then goto Microsoft for the updates and then it
downloads SP2.

The Multimedia Audio Conroller, I do have the original install cd from
Creative Labs but im sure it still shows the exclamation mark when i install
it.
I think I will take the card out tho and see if it makes any difference to
the performance.

DB

I think it could be hardware related.......SP2 installed fine earlier but it
still crashes out all the time
Via Google I was advised to download AdobeFlash Player..........nope, didnt
work.....watched a couple of YouTube videos and it died on me......
Could my memory have gone faulty ?

Waheey.......alterred a couple of settings in the Bios,,,,,and it hasnt gone
off for 48 hours now......left on all the time......and played stacks of
YouTube videos too.
One thing .....in my Device Manager, it showed problems with my Audio
drivers......and when I checked things in the Bios.....it showed on-board
sound enabled, which should have been disabled and i've a seperate sound
card installed.I alterred a couple of settings.....soopadoopa!!!

Cheers for all input.....touchwood, it's all well.
