Crashing because Blaster worm on my laptop Windows XP

Hi
I have sorted out why Norton Antivirus had not been able
to download updates. Consequently while it was not working
I now have the Balster worm in my Toshiba Laptop which has
Windows XP. A couple of minutes after going onto
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com it crashes stopping me
from downloading the 12 updates that I have missed.

Q How can I get rid of this worm?

Q How do I activate the declined box (which is greyed out)
on the Automatic Updates tab of System, Performance and
Maintenance in Control Panel so I can revive old updates?

Many thanks for urgent responses 12.30 UK time 13 Nov.

I don't know if I am right but I have seen a friend of mine that had the
worm shutting down the computer every time he was trying to connect, that hw
created a new user and this user didn't have any problem.
It is worth trying.

Greetings --

If you've connected the PC to the Internet without having first
enabling a firewall, without having first installed an antivirus
application with current virus definition files, and/or before
installing the KB824146 Hotfix, you're very likely to have been
infected from any of the thousands of PCs on the Internet that are
constantly broadcasting the Blaster and/or Welchia worms. It only
takes a few seconds of exposure.

To stay on-line long enough to get the necessary updates, patches,
and removal tools, click Start > Run, and enter "shutdown -a" when the
next RPC countdown begins. This will abort the shut down. Also, make
sure you've enabled a firewall before starting, to preclude any more
intrusions while getting the updates/patches/tools.
