crashed disk still lives

Thanks to all who responded to my tale of woe. I plugged the crashed disk
into a good computer, it came up in Chkdsk with lines and lines of "sector
not found" stuff, making loud grinding and clacking noises, I knew it was
dead. It finished booting up, the drive in question appeared as normal in
explorer. Works perfectly again, no noises. Don't know what the problem was,
maybe MBR. All's well... Thanks again.

Glad to hear it's working again but I would be hesitant to
trust it now, unless you can pinpoint the problem. Also it
would be good to follow up to the original message instead
of a new thread / title.

Because the bad sectors arent being used for now.
Works perfectly again,

No it doesnt.
no noises.

Different matter entirely.
Don't know what the problem was, maybe MBR.

Nope, that doesnt produce that particular error message or symptoms.
All's well...

No it isnt, the drive is dying.

The problem is obvious, bad sectors on the hard drive.

Thats the reason for the "sector not found" messages.

Thanks for the help again. I have since run Chkdsk several times on the
suspect disk, always (now) shows no problems. I have run scandisk twice now
on this disk, shows no bad sectors. With the tools that I have, I don't know
how I would confirm that the disk is "dying". I think Gibson has some long
term test software, but I'm not sure that it would be necessary.
You're right about not starting a new thread-the reason I did was that my
original post "no longer appears" on my computer so I thought that meant a
new post. My mistake. Thanks again.

All that means is that drive has reallocated the original bad sectors now.

If bad sectors did show up, its quite likely that more will show up
unless it was just a power surge that produced the initial ones.

Post the Everest SMART report.

Every once in a while a f'd up controller, or cable will make your
drive go into the click of death mode. Most often, though the click of
death really is the click of death... Make sure you have a backup.
