Crackling Noise from Speakers System Freezes

An interesting problem I am having. The following takes place If you have an
executable/setup file in a folder. Problem (which I came across accidentally)
If I open a folder, lets say a download folder and I double click on an
executable file or a setup/install file ---- Before actuall clicking
yes/run the file STOP right there. So lets say now you have a folder open in
the background with a popup asking if you want to run the file, with both
those windows open if you press on the backgroung window (not the foreground)
try clicking on the back menu without executing "OK" or "Cancel" on the front
windows it used to be I'd get a nice little jingle
sound and a flashing window indicating I needed to click on the top
window. HOWEVER now when I do the same the front window
blinks erradically and makes an annoying static crackling noise through the
speaker (which are on the monitor). This goes on for a few seconds and the
system seems to LOCK IP AND FREEZE and I cannot do anything with the system
with the exception of contrl-alt-del and then I can terminate the window.
ANOTHER INTERESTING thing, I checked CPU utilization during this anomaly and
it SPIKES up to 100% FOR A FEW SECONDS. In addition half of the icons on the
system tray in lower right hand corner disappear!!! Wierd....... It is
annoying. I
don't know why it's like that something is wrong or maybe got corrupted. My
gut feeling is that this is a Windows XP OS problem...Please Help me!

Doubtful as it sounds like a hardware problem. You might check
connections or see if the problem occurs with different speakers
connected.

If there are any Warning or Error Reports post copies in the other
thread as a follow up.

Hey Gerry, thanks for the quick response,
I've tried different speakers, same result, even no speakers
you gave me an idea though, I may let the thing keep doing it's thing for
more than a few second and see if it gives me an error message. I'm no tusre
what you meant, should I post the error message here or other?
And in the process viewer I can also list what process is spiking up the CPU
utilization.
I'll write back! Btw, do you know of any other resources I can check for
this problem?

Thanks much, Moe

No error Message
CPU utilization split between "explore.exe" and "winlogon.exe" and a couple
of percent here and there on others...

If its not the speakers then I suggest you get the connection where
the cable from the speakers plugs into the computer checked out.

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for writing back.
It almost seems like the speaker noises are a byproduct of what's going on
in the system when this happens. The important aspects are that the system
freezes and CPU spikes to 100%. Like the system is trying to do something but
it's a little confused about what to do...:) I actually checked this out on
other systems and it seems to do the same on the others with a variance in
what noise the other computers make. But all of them (5) that I tried seem to
freeze up and CPU spikes

What is the image name of the process producing 100% CPU usage?
